Make a Plan

First things first, you should always come up with a plan. Making a plan before you go out and observe will help it go much more smoothly.

For me, sometimes it can be hard to plan out what to observe, where and why.  I personally have to take some time out to really think about my observations and the method  I need to use.

Sometimes you might not even follow your origional plan and that is acceptable too. I do that all the time, but it still helps to put a plan to paper to prepare yourself for the observation.
